Wear Neutrals/Whites/Greys/Pastels

Neutrals tend keep the attention on the baby and away from your clothing. White is a classic and timeless choice when deciding what to wear for newborn photos, and it's a nod to newness and innocence of the baby.

Pastels and light neutrals (white, pale pink, pale purple, peach, tan, etc) will give a soft, monotone look whereas bold colors (think: navy, bright purple, pink, bold blue, etc) will provide more contrast and help you stand out from the background. Both look great! It's up to you and what you want on your walls.

Choose a style (formal, preppy, bohemian, sporty, etc). Choose one or two neutrals (denim, khaki, white, gray or black). Find your favorite article of clothing to use as a starting point. Pull 2-3 colors from it and stick to shades in those colors as your palette.

Studio light or natural light can be used. Accessories, backdrops, flowers or greenery and props are used to add texture and beauty to the photos. Your photographer will gently position your baby into a variety of cute poses during the photo shoot. Keeping your baby comfortable and content the entire time.

While there is no set standard for tipping a newborn photographer, a general guideline is to tip between 15% to 20% of the total session cost. However, it's important to remember that tipping is not expected or required in the newborn photography industry.

When to take newborn photos? There's no exact age but the general rule of thumb if looking to achieve those curly, snuggly, sleepy newborn poses, is to hold your newborn session within those first two weeks of life. I always suggest aiming to hold our newborn session around days 8-10.

You also don't want them in something that is big and bulky so that they can't snuggle up to (or even hold) baby. For boys, jeans and a t-shirt or polo work well. Girls could wear leggings and a simple top or even a simple dress.

The best advice really is to keep it simple. Tip #2: I always recommend starting with a neutral palette. Light-colored wardrobe in creams, light grays, and light pastels helps in keeping the focus on expressions and the moment. Tip #3: Moms, say yes to the dress!

This is not the time for trying to button those pre-pregnancy jeans. Instead, wear leggings, sized up pants, or special postpartum pants that have a tighter band than regular maternity pants, but not too tight that you're not comfortable. During your session, your comfort is a priority.
