Link - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Guide - IGN (2024)

Breath of the Wild Biography

Like his unnamed father, Link is a Knight of Hyrule, and was originally tasked with protecting Princess Zelda as she went about her duties, and was officially named a Champion alongside members of the Rito, Zora, Gerudo, and Goron races. However, the Calamity War caused Link to become badly wounded defending the Princess, and was put into a sleep chamber to rest for 100 years in stasis.

After awakening from his long slumber with amnesia, Link slowly regained his memories and set out to rescue Princess Zelda, who had been held captive by Calamity Ganon this whole time. Traveling to each corner of Hyrule, Link freed the ancient behemoth constructs known as the Divine Beast of Ganon's corruption, and was able to meet with the spirits of the other former Champions. When he was at last strong enough to wield the Master Sword once more, Link returned to Hyrule Castle and defeated Calamity Ganon with the help of the Champions and Princess Zelda.

How Old Is Link in TOTK

He may look young, but Link is well over 100 years old after his slumber in stasis! Link appears to be young, and if Hylians age similarly to humans, he was likley in his 20s before stasis. Further evidence of this young age is his low rank as a swordsmen -- in the Royal Guard's regimented forces, he doesn't hold a title. Although he is recognized as a sort of bodyguard for Zelda. Link is a few years older than Breath of the Wild in Tears of the Kingdom, based on the ages of his allies. This means Link's age can be calculated as follows:

  • Link is about 20 years when he enters stasis.
  • Plus 100 years in stasis.
  • Plus 3-5 years between Breath of the Wild and TOTK.

So Link is about 123 - 127 years old in Tears of the Kingdom. Aragorn is 87 years old during the events of The Lord of the Rings, so youthful, but aged swordsmen abound in fantasy.

Tears of the Kingdom

Some time has passed since the events of Breath of the Wild, and Link is once more traveling alongside Princess Zelda. During the exploration of ruins deep under the ground, they come upon the tomb of Ganondorf, the Gerudo King. His mummified remains are locked in place by strange glowing green magic that seems to manifest in a spectral arm.

However, the magic sealing Ganondorf away is shattered, and as the mummified creature re-awakens, it attacks Link and Zelda, using the power of its Blight to damage Link's right arm and render the Master Sword useless. Both are thrown into the depths of the chasm, and it is not yet known what happens to the pair - but both survive.

Without his Master Sword, Link must now rely on a new magic that has bound to his corrupted arm to once again save the land from the return of Ganondorf and his minions.

Link's Voice Actor

Sure, Link isn't the most chatty of characters, in fact, he has never spoken once in the Zelda Franchise. Nevertheless, there is someone behind those little sounds Link mutters every now and then, and that someone is actor Kengo Takanishi.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom doesn't mark the end of the entire franchise, as the Zelda series has a history of showing Link's triumphs, failures, and timeline splits. Tears of the Kingdom didn't create a time loop or bring the timeline back to Skyward Sword, contrary to speculation.
