Can I get into UW Madison with a 3.7 GPA? ›

The UW–Madison GPA requirements do not include a minimum GPA necessary for admission. However, the average UW–Madison GPA for the freshman currently enrolled is 3.392. So, you can assume that there are unofficial UW–Madison GPA requirements for applicants of around 3.4.

The GPA Truth: Not All 3.7s Are Created Equal

But at a school as competitive as UW (think Hunger Games, but with textbooks instead of tridents), it might not be the golden ticket either. The average GPA for admitted students hovers around a cool 3. 83, which means you're in the ballpark, but not exactly a shoo-in.

We look for you to be earning top grades—mostly As—in challenging courses, including honors, IB, and/or AP, when available. While we don't specifically base a decision on your GPA or your class rank, we do consider your academic performance in the context of the available offerings at your school.

At the same time, UW-Madison has become increasingly more selective with the student body they admit. The university's acceptance rate has fallen from 67% to 49% in the past decade. This number takes an even steeper drop when you take into account the out-of-state acceptance rate falling to roughly 18%.

All students are initially admitted into the university and not into specific programs and majors, with the exception of our Direct Entry programs.

With a GPA of 3.49, University of Wisconsin - La Crosse requires you to be around average in your high school class. You'll need a mix of A's and B's, and very few C's. If you have a lower GPA, you can compensate with harder courses like AP or IB classes.

GPA of 3.50 minimum (on a 4.0 scale) and minimum ACT score of 27 or SAT score of 1860. Admission is competitive and selective. Students with the strongest qualifications, including number of courses taken, rigor of academic program (honors and Advanced Placement courses, etc.)

A 3.7 GPA is considered to be a very good GPA and is often an indicator of strong academic performance.

But, this implies that a 3.75 is good enough to be competitive. Even viewed in the same light ( but to a lesser extent) as a 3.99 GPA. So a great number of students are accepted with a GPA between 3.75-3.99. So you do have a chance!

For context, the middle 50% of admitted students at UT Austin generally have a GPA of around 3.75 to 4.0. Although your GPA falls slightly below the lower range, it's not an insurmountable obstacle; keep in mind that a significant number of students are admitted with lower GPAs.
